Overview

Thomson, a small town located in McDuffie County, was founded in 1837 as a railroad depot. Thomson is located about 24 minutes outside of Augusta and about an hour and a half drive from Atlanta as well as Athens.

Things to Do

On the first Sunday of November for the Belle Meade Hunt, a traditional fox hunt punctuated with pomp and circumstances. Tour White Hills Herb farm, an 1890’s restored farmhouse. Shop forbidden treasure at Aunt Tiques and Uncle Junks.

The area’s year-round mild climate makes it an ideal locale for outdoor activities. Festivals, such as the annual Blind Willie Mc Tell Blues Festival and other special events provide endless opportunities for down-home revelry. Local boutiques offer one-of-a kind finds with a Southern twist. While area restaurants satisfy the pickiest of palates, this is a slice of Southern heaven.

Life in Thomson

Old Rock House is a historic garrison house in Thomson, Georgia. The house was purportedly the home to the ancestors of former president Jimmy Carter. McDuffie Museum is a nice place to visit along with the Laurel and Hardy Museum. You may want to also visit Clarks Hill Lake and White Hills Farm if time permits.

Thomson is country living at its best with acres of greenspace and livestock grazing the fields. Lots of outdoor activities including horseback riding, hunting, and fishing.
